Getting Around Manchester Airport

A practical guide to navigating the airport perimeter, joining the local road network, and driving your rental car in the surrounding area.

Driving Out of Manchester Airport

Manchester Airport (MAN) is exceptionally well-connected to the UK's motorway network, making it a highly convenient starting point for any road trip. Unlike some airports located deep within urban sprawl, MAN sits on the southern edge of Greater Manchester, providing immediate access to the M56 motorway.

Whether you have just picked up an economy car for a quick city visit or an SUV for exploring the countryside, this guide will help you understand the local road network and get your journey started smoothly.

Exiting the Car Rental Village

Remember that all major providers, such as Hertz and Enterprise, dispatch vehicles from the Car Rental Village on Ringway Road, not the passenger terminals. You will join the road network directly from this location.

Joining the M56 Motorway

The M56 is the primary artery serving the airport. As you exit the Car Rental Village, you will be directed onto a slip road that connects almost instantly to Junction 5 of the M56.

  • Heading East (M56): This route takes you towards the M60 (Manchester's orbital ring road), providing access into Manchester city centre, Stockport, and further east into Yorkshire.
  • Heading West (M56): This takes you towards Chester, North Wales, and connects to the M6 motorway. The M6 is the main north-south highway, leading up to the Lake District or down towards Birmingham and London.

Driving to Manchester City Centre

If your destination is the city centre, the most direct route is usually via the A5103, locally known as Princess Parkway. You will join the M56 Eastbound from the airport and quickly merge onto the A5103 northbound. This dual carriageway leads directly into the heart of the city.

The journey typically takes about 25 to 35 minutes depending on traffic. Be aware that Princess Parkway has a mix of 50 mph and 40 mph speed limits, enforced by average speed cameras. Always follow the displayed signage.

Navigating Local Tolls and Clean Air Zones

When driving in and around Manchester, it is helpful to be aware of local road policies to avoid unexpected fines.

  • Clean Air Zones (CAZ): Currently, Greater Manchester does not charge private cars to enter its Clean Air Zone. However, if you plan to travel to other cities like Birmingham or Bath, charges may apply. Opting for an electric vehicle is a reliable way to bypass these fees entirely.
  • Toll Roads: There are no toll roads between the airport and Manchester city centre. However, if you are driving towards Liverpool via the Mersey Gateway Bridge, a toll fee applies. Rental companies will pass unpaid toll fines onto you with a significant administration fee, so it is important to pay them online promptly.

Fuel Stations Near the Airport

Familiarising yourself with local petrol stations is particularly important for when you return your vehicle. There is a 24-hour petrol station situated on Ringway Road, directly adjacent to the entrance of the Car Rental Village. This is the most convenient location to fulfill a "Full-to-Full" fuel policy right before handing back the keys.
