Navigating the Manchester Airport Train Station
Manchester Airport boasts an excellent, fully integrated transport hub known as "The Station". Serving as the arrival point for trains, trams (Metrolink), and regional buses, it connects the airport directly to Manchester city centre and destinations across the north of England.
If you are arriving at the airport by train with the intention of picking up a rental car, or if you are dropping a car off and heading into the city via rail, it is essential to understand how The Station connects to the rest of the airport infrastructure.
Crucial Transfer Information
You cannot walk from the train station to the Car Rental Village. The rental desks are located on Ringway Road, a few miles away. You must walk from the train station into one of the main passenger terminals (T1, T2, or T3) to catch the free shuttle bus.
Walking to the Terminals
The Station is physically linked to all three passenger terminals via a covered, elevated walkway network known as the Skylink. The walkways are equipped with moving travelators, making it manageable even with heavy luggage.
- To Terminal 1 & 3: Follow the Skylink signs from the station concourse. It takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes to walk to T1, and a further 5 minutes to reach T3.
- To Terminal 2: Follow the specific signs for T2. This is the longest walk from the station, taking roughly 10 to 15 minutes via the Skylink.
Catching the Rental Shuttle
Once you have walked via the Skylink into your chosen terminal, simply follow the yellow overhead signs for "Car Rental". These signs will lead you out of the terminal doors to the designated shuttle bus stops. The bus is free and departs every 10 minutes.
Major Rail Connections
The Manchester Airport train station provides rapid, direct services to several major hubs:
- Manchester Piccadilly: Trains run incredibly frequently (often every 10-15 minutes) taking roughly 20 minutes to reach the city centre.
- TransPennine Express: Offers direct, fast routes to destinations like Leeds, York, Sheffield, and even Edinburgh or Glasgow.
- Northern Rail & Transport for Wales: Connects the airport to local hubs like Liverpool Lime Street, Chester, and North Wales.
Metrolink (Tram) Services
The station also houses the terminus for the Manchester Metrolink (tram) network. The Navy Line runs from the airport through Wythenshawe, connecting directly into the heart of Manchester (Cornbrook, St Peter's Square, and Victoria Station). Trams run every 12 minutes.
